Waiting on God

A popular verse in the Bible is: Isaiah 40:31 tells us, “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint”.

Nearly everyone likes the idea of flying like an eagle, and running and not getting tired. These verses were even made into a popular Christian song.

It’s the first part of the verse that we have trouble with. Nobody likes to wait. Waiting is one of the hardest things for me to do. I hate waiting around, doing nothing. It is just my personality. It is hard for me not to jump in ahead of God, and try to fix things myself. It took a long time, but I finally learned that, when we wait on God, we are not doing nothing. We are being renewed. Waiting on God is trusting God. It is having faith in God.

King David went before the Lord every morning, laying his petitions before God …..and then he waited.

“Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament. Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.“

David was dealing with things far weightier than what most of us deal with on a daily basis. Yet, he fully expected that God would answer him…..and he waited.

To me this verse is a great encouragement. Sometimes, I feel guilty coming to the Lord with my problems. Some are quite small. God is not our genie in a vase, that is going to give us all our wants and desires. He knows what is best for us, and getting everything we want is not it. But when we have real issues. God is there. He is listening. Your answer to your circumstances might not come today….but continue to go before Him, and in His timing, He will take care of it. Just wait on Him. Wait expectantly……as David did.

“”But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me”. Micah 7:7

The Bible offers many scriptures for those in seasons of waiting, emphasizing that waiting on God is an active posture of trust rather than a passive state of doing nothing. When we wait patiently on our Lord, we are promised renewed strength, guidance, and the eventual realization of God’s goodness.

Habakkuk 2:3 assures us that God’s timing is always perfect, not delayed.

George Muller was a Christian Evangelist in the late 1800s. He built orphanages in England that housed thousands of orphans. His faith bordered on the unbelievable, as he waited on God to supply their needs. He never asked for donations, he and his staff just prayed for their needs, and God always supplied.

One example of Muller’s faith was when it was mealtime and there was no food for the orphans. He had all the orphans and staff sit down at the table. They gave God thanks for what they were about to receive…. and they waited. After a few minutes, there was a knock at the door. People had felt led by God to bring food for the orphanage. God always fulfills our needs. He is never early. He is always right on time. I encourage everyone to read George Muller’s books. They are truly uplifting.

Remember, waiting on God is not just doing nothing, it is active. It is trusting and obeying God.  It is putting your faith in the one that created you and loves you. In doing so, it becomes a time of renewing your own spirit, and the strengthening and growing of your faith.
