Guardian Angels

All throughout the Bible, we read about angels. They seem to be everywhere, carrying messages, helping people, battling the devil and his demons. We hear about angels appearing as humans and coming out of nowhere to rescue people. Were they really angels? Do we have guardian angels?

Many believe that as Christians, we have our own guardian angel to protect us. One verse that contributes to this thinking is this verse concerning children, Jesus said;

“see that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my father in heaven” (Matthew 18: 10).

In Psalm we are told that the angels will protect us.

“For he will command his angels concerning you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91: 11-12).

Billy Graham stated: “The most important characteristic of angels is not that they have the power to exercise control over our lives, or that they are beautiful, but that they work on our behalf. They are motivated by an inexhaustible love for God and are jealous to see that the will of God in Jesus Christ is fulfilled in us.”

   Another passage of scripture that seems to support the guardian angel concept is Peter’s miraculous deliverance from prison by an angel in (Acts 12: 5-11, 16) “they said, “It must be his angel” (Acts 12:15)

 Many times throughout  the Bible we see angels taking on the form of humans to accomplish their tasks. Genesis 19 tells how two angels came as men to save Lot and his family before God destroyed Sodom.

   We never know when angels may appear. In fact, the Scriptures tells us;

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2).

John Paton, an early missionary to the New Hebrides Islands tells a story when angels took on the form of humans to protect him and his wife. One night natives surrounded their mission intent on killing them. Rev. Paton and his wife prayed throughout the night that God would protect them. When morning came the natives were gone.

 A year later, the tribal chief was converted to Christ. Rev Paton asked the chief what kept him and his men from burning down the mission and killing them that night. The chief told him that the mission was surrounded by large men in shining clothes with swords in their hands. After hearing that, Rev. Paton realized that God had sent his angels to protect them.

It seems I have always liked staying busy, almost always in a hurry, taking chances, and being careless when I shouldn’t be. As a result, there have been more than one occasion when I believe an angel has been there to save me from myself. In fact, I have no doubt that I was saved by an angel on at least two occasions.

A time that leaves no doubt but that an angel was there to help involved a pastor friend of ours. Their teenage son, Tim, was in a very bad automobile accident. He was in a coma and not expected to live. The doctors said if he did live, he would have severe brain damage. But God in His wonderful mercy healed him completely, and today he is a pastor himself.

   Tim was however in the hospital for quite some time. His parents spent every minute that was possible with him at the hospital. Eventually the day came when Tim was able to leave the hospital. But before he left he wanted to say goodbye to Mr. Smith.

  “Who is Mr. Smith,” his parents asked?

Tim replied, “he is an old man that always came and set with me when nobody else was there”

 They asked at the nurses’ station about Mr. Smith. You probably already guessed, there was no Mr. Smith who worked or volunteered at the hospital. Just another example of one of God’s ministering spirits in the form of an old man.

There are many stories of angels helping people. But whether we have one specific angel watching over us, or whether we have angels watching over in general, doesn’t really matter. Angels are watching over us all the time, and if God sends one or one hundred angels, it will be exactly what’s needed.
