How we live our lives as Christians is usually on the same level as our perception of God. The greater our perception of God, the greater our trust in Him. Therefore, the closer and more intimate our relationship with Him is.
Theology is the human attempt to understand God. It is absolutely impossible for us as humans to understand God. God is far greater than we can ever comprehend in our wildest dreams.
God tells us in Isaiah 55: 8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Every idea we have of God is inadequate. Think about the billions of people on the earth, God not only hears the prayers of each one uttered, but He also knows the thoughts of every person on earth. And at the same time, His presence extends to the farthermost reaches of the universe and beyond. The universe is trillions of light years across, yet God is bigger than that. He created the universe, therefore it cannot contain Him. He is greater still. God is beyond the comprehension of our minds to understand. The more we realize this, the closer we come to God. Head knowledge can never bring us into the presence and understanding of God. We can only achieve that through the Spirit. It requires heart knowledge, not head knowledge.
We must understand that our knowledge of God cannot be acquired only through academic studies. In order to truly understand God we must allow the Holy Spirit to reveal God to us. The Holy Spirit will reveal everything we need to know about God and how to live our lives until the day we see our Lord and Saviour face to face. On that day all of our questions will be answered. On that day it will all become clear. “Now I know in part; then I shall know fully” 1 Corinthians 13:12.
When Jesus rose from the grave and appeared to the disciples, they still could not believe that Jesus had risen from the grave. It wasn’t until Pentecost when they were filled with the Holy Spirit that they understood and truly believed. Belief is not based on seeing but comes from God through the Holy Spirit.
When we begin to think about God, we think about what is beyond our ability to comprehend and beyond the limit of our human intelligence. Very plainly put, if we can conceive it, it is not God.
We know that God’s immense essence is invisible to our physical eyes and incomprehensible to our minds. And He will be so throughout eternity because nothing can perfectly comprehend that which is infinite unless it is also infinite. Consequently, the blessed sight that we will have of God will always be in the face of Jesus Christ.
God is perfect. He can not be added to or made more Godly. As humans, we use the term perfect very loosely, such as it was a perfect performance or a perfect day. To be perfect means that it cannot be better. It cannot be made more perfect. Perfect is that which lacks nothing it should have and has nothing it should not have. It cannot be made more perfect in any possible way. God is perfect. What He is at any moment is what He is at every moment.
We cannot compare God with anything or anyone else for He is incomparable, there is nothing to compare Him to. In Isaiah, we read: “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
God is limitless. His attributes are limitless. When we seek to walk with God, allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal to us who God really is, our perception of God grows as well. God does not change, but our perception of God grows as we experience His greatness and goodness.
Our perception of God is our foundation for everything else. Once we know who God is and that He is the Creator and Redeemer, we begin to understand how things are supposed to be. Our perception of God needs to be based on a solid foundation that will keep us firm through any and all situations.
The more we know about God and the more we know Him intimately, His character and attributes; the more we will understand ourselves and that wondrous connection we have with Him.
God reveals Himself to us in the Scriptures. He reveals Himself supremely in the person of Jesus Christ. It should be our goal to become more Christ-like.
It is the supreme purpose of God to bring us into alignment with His character.
After all, we are created in His image. As a child of God, we should display the attributes of God. Just as we are often able to see the resemblance of the parent through the offspring, people should be able to see Jesus in us. As the saying goes; “you may be the only Jesus a particular person ever sees.”
God made us in His image and never meant for us to mirror anything less than Himself. He never meant for us to have a homemade perception of God.
The more our life mirrors the life of Christ, the more the Holy Spirit is able to work through us, the closer our walk with the Lord becomes, and the more our light shines on the world around us.
“How happy are the people who can worship joyfully!
LORD, they walk in the light of your presence.” Psalms 89:15
